Chapter 18

James thought Janey looked lost without her mirror. Like a teenager without a cellphone. The girl wandered behind the sheriff without any other sense of direction. This disturbed James because he was beginning to have a change of heart about the girl. His gut told him she may have answers the rest of them didn’t. Sure, there might be ghosts in this building, but he felt sure they would prove innocent of any killing or throwing of corpses. He felt like Janey would know for sure.

The sheriff led them like cattle through the bar area and into the main hallway until Janey stopped and turned toward the dark bedroom. James noticed a melting pile of snow had already accumulated beneath the window.

Janey stared at the glassless window, wind whipping her ponytail. She whispered, “It doesn’t belong here, has no real power. No ritual, no intent, then no power. It lives off our fear and its rage.”

James wished her words weren’t so fierce and that she didn’t remain so calm while saying them. He wanted badly to believe she made them up but knew she didn’t, the girl guided by the residue within her.

The curtains billowed with a gust of wind, and James thought he might need to grab Vic and run for his life. When nothing appeared out of the darkness, he relaxed. He glanced at Vic. Her eyes looked sunken with deep shadows. Vic needed sleep after what she’d seen and been through.

“Keep moving,” the sheriff said. “Let’s get you folks to your rooms so I can handle this situation.”

James remained skeptical about the sheriff’s methods. He doubted if the sheriff understood what plagued them, let alone possessed the ability to find an adequate solution. His money remained on Janey. But how could he convince the hard-nosed sheriff of this? Perhaps he could reason with the man.

He decided on, “Perhaps we should allow Janey to help us.”

“Help us what?” Robbie asked.

“Help us stay alive,” James said. He tried to look serious with only a note of placid self-assurance. This expression often worked wonders with his students. “Always a good idea, in my humble opinion.”

“I have a firearm,” Robbie said. “You’ll all stay plenty safe. No killer I ever heard about could take a slug to the chest and keep on killing.”

“You saw Dowling’s corpse come smashing through the window and those arms come out of the mirror,” James said.

“And my bullets put an end to the thing.”

“Are you an idiot?” Janey asked. She no longer sounded like a little girl.

Good Lord, James thought. If the sheriff didn’t trust the girl before, he certainly wouldn’t after she said that. He would go it on his own, and that would ruin them all.

James held his breath, ready for Robbie to take charge and dismiss the one person who may understand what’s going on. He was all for respecting authority, but sometimes authority needed to respect folks with answers.

Robbie frowned, then shook his head. He let out a long breath as if to calm himself, then smiled.
